Winter is fast approaching, and with it comes the importance of properly preparing your vehicle to tackle icy and snowy roads. Installing the right winter tires and knowing when to do so can be a source of questions. At Quattro Tires, we regularly receive inquiries about winter tires and their maintenance. To help you drive safely this winter, we have compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions.

1. Why should I install winter tires even if I don’t often drive in the snow?

In Quebec, the installation of winter tires is mandatory from December 1st to March 15th, according to the law. While it is not mandated by law in other provinces, it is highly recommended to install winter tires because they significantly enhance safety on the road during the colder months. Winter tires are not just designed for snow. Their unique rubber composition remains flexible even in low temperatures, ensuring better grip on all cold surfaces, whether there's snow, ice, or simply dry pavement. Once temperatures drop below 7°C, summer and all-season tires lose their effectiveness. Installing winter tires guarantees better safety on the road throughout the fall and winter.

2. What is the difference between studded and non-studded tires?

Studded tires come equipped with small metal spikes that enhance traction on ice, particularly in persistent icy conditions. However, they are usually less comfortable to drive because they tend to be noisier on the road. Non-studded tires, on the other hand, utilize a rubber compound and a tread pattern specially designed to provide excellent grip on snow and ice. If you often drive on icy or frozen roads, studded tires are a good option. However, for regularly cleared roads, non-studded tires are perfectly suitable.

3. When should I install my winter tires?

It is recommended to install your winter tires as soon as temperatures drop below 7°C, usually around mid-October. Waiting for the first snowfall or icy conditions can be risky, and you might also face long waits at installers. Installing your tires early not only helps you avoid the rush but also ensures your safety throughout the fall.

4. Can I use my winter tires year-round?

No, it is not advisable to use winter tires during the summer. The rubber in winter tires is designed to remain flexible in low temperatures and will wear out more quickly in warm weather. Additionally, this could increase your fuel consumption and decrease the lifespan of the tires. It is best to switch back to all-season or summer tires once the temperature stabilizes above 7°C in the spring.

5. How many seasons do winter tires last, and how can I tell if they are still good for another season?

The lifespan of a winter tire depends on a variety of factors, including the type of vehicle, driving conditions, and tire maintenance. To maximize their longevity, it’s essential to store them in a cool, dry place during the summer and regularly check the tire pressure. To determine if your tires are still good, check the tread depth. Winter tires should have a tread depth of at least 4 mm (or 4/32 of an inch) for optimal traction. If you don't have a tread depth gauge, you can use a $2 coin: insert it into the tread groove. If the text on the silver part of the coin is visible, your tires are worn out and should be replaced.

6. Can I mix winter tires with other types of tires?

No, it is strongly advised against mixing winter tires with summer or all-season tires. Using different tires on your vehicle can destabilize handling and compromise your safety, especially during emergency braking or on slippery roads. To ensure uniform traction, make sure all four tires are the same.

Winter tires are essential to ensuring your safety on the roads during the cold season. Whether to comply with regulations or simply to benefit from better traction in challenging weather conditions, it is important to understand when and why to install them. If you still have doubts or questions, the team at Quattro Tires is here to guide you and help you choose the tires best suited to your needs. Don’t wait for the first snowfall: prepare your vehicle now and drive with peace of mind this winter!
